Han Christian Andersen Medal

The winners of the 2004 Hans Christian Andersen Award were announced during this weeks children's book fair in Bologna. Martin Waddell and Max Velthuijs both picked up awards for their contribution to children's literature.

Irish author Martin Waddell won the Hans Christian Andersen Author Award, while Max Velthuijs, illustrator of the popular Frog titles, is the winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustration.
The awards are presented every two years by IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) to an author and an illustrator "whose complete works have made an important and lasting contribution to children's literature". The awards will formally be presented at the opening ceremony of IBBY's Congree in Cape Town, South Africa.
