The Panel featuring: Sam Llewellyn, Grace Dent, Jacqueline Wilson and Bali Rai
The key note address from Miranda - Director of the Reading Agency - explored and developed the agency's own report "Fullfilling the Potential", with breakout sessions following where each group was asked to suggest 6 ideas for involving young people in their chosen topic.
It was suggested that we publish the results of these breakout sessions . . .

Topic 1 - Reading Groups

1. Consider the Venue :

Hold an author event in a bar for older teenagers.
           This will involve non-participants too.

2. Train all staff not just YP team to work with teenagers and read the literature.

3. Involve young people in the organisation. Use the Youth Cabinet, email, text them.

4. Work in partnership with schools, youth service, publishers and other authorities.

5. Keep the reading activities varied and interesting.

6. Provide food and drink!

Topic 2 - Book Selection

1. "You Choose" Selection boxes in non-library venues.

2. Reverse selection. Invite teenagers to weed out the dross.

3. Take young people bookbuying. Trust them with a budget.

4. Support the choice of non-book material CDs, Audiotapes and Graphic novels.

5. Offer rewards if an item selected by the young people is borrowed (free CD loan etc).

6. Offer on-going, informal opportunities to review and select.

Topic 3 - Library Design

1. Establish a youth panel in every authority and work towards youth panels linked to every     library.

2. Use young people to reach young people-peer consultation. Offer them training and     incentives to take part.

3. Establish consultation as important at the beginning of the design process.

4. Give young people proper ownership of the project from the beginning.

5. Inter Agency Work eg Youth Service, TRA. Train young people to deal with the public.

6. Set parameters and Time Scales for the consultation.
